His clinics include a "hands on" approach to playing, not just Tony lecturing and demonstrating, thus creating a dynamic interaction with the students. He also gets them involved in various areas of performing. Having been a studio musician in L.A., along with playing for major stars throughout the world, Tony stresses the importance of sight reading, studying and applying harmony, phrasing and interpretation in numerous idioms, and above all, mastery of the instrument, so that they can "cease playing the instrument, and simply play music." When requested, Horowitz sends copies of some of his original big band arrangements of tunes that are on his CD, "This Is Tony Horowitz," ahead for the students to rehearse, and then perform with them, either in the band room, or in concert. Tony also makes it a point, if he does a concert with the students, to feature them along with himself.
